Basic Motivational Interviewing Online


Ready to strengthen your impact with clients who are working toward behavior change? Join us for this online course where you’ll explore four essential skills rooted in the spirit of motivational interviewing (MI). Through interactive discussions and small-group practice in Zoom breakout rooms, you’ll learn how to build stronger connections, spark insight, and support meaningful behavior change. No experience required, this course is perfect for anyone new to MI or looking to refresh their foundational skills.

Ideal for

Patient Navigators, Community Health Workers, Nurses, public health professionals, or anyone who is working with clients on behavior change.

Cost

  • $25 for participants in Region VIII (CO, UT, WY, MT, ND, SD).
  • $150 for participants outside our region.

What to Expect

This course is instructor-led with one live learning session (LLS) per week. You will complete weekly homework before attending each LLS. The live sessions will be interactive with both large and small group activities. We ask that you participate in the live learning sessions by video to connect with your peers.

The time commitment for this course (including live sessions) is about 2 hours per week.

4 Live Learning Sessions

The Live Learning Sessions will be held on Wednesdays, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM MT.

  • 1 week before the first live session, you will have access to the online materials.
  • Live session 1 - 02/04/26
  • Live session 2 - 02/11/26
  • Live session 3 - 02/18/26
  • Live session 4 - 02/25/26

Course Access

The course will open 1 week before the first live session. You will receive additional instructions at that time. Make sure you sign in prior to your first live session to complete the required homework. Please plan to join the Zoom sessions via camera.

Successful Completion

To earn a Certificate of Completion, you must complete the following:

  • Attend 3 of 4 live learning sessions
  • Complete 80% of assignments
  • Complete the post-course evaluation

Learning Objectives

  1. Define motivational interviewing (MI).
  2. Identify 4 key MI skills (Open ended questions, affirmations, reflections and summary).
  3. Practice strategies to enhance client readiness to change.

  • If you are unable to attend the course, you must cancel your registration at least 10 days before the first day of training in order to receive a refund.
  • Cancellations are subject to a $75 cancellation fee.
  • To cancel, you must send an email to gardenia.najera@unco.edu.
  • No-shows will not be granted a refund.
  • Refunds will be issued on the original card used for payment OR as a credit toward a future course.
