Community Health Worker Fundamentals In-Person


A community health worker (CHW) is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. In this course, you will be guided by our expert instructors on strategies to enhance your CHW skills. Topics include CHW scope of practice, how to respond to ethical challenges you may encounter on the job, inreach and outreach, presentation skills and community assessment and advocacy.

This course includes required prework (about 6 hours) plus 2 days of in-person instruction.

Course Access

Successful Completion

To earn a Certificate of Completion, you must complete the following:

  • Complete the course prework
  • Attend both in-person days
  • Complete 80% of assignments
  • Deliver Health Presentation assignment

  1. Identify what lies inside and outside of a CHW’s scope of practice.
  2. Respond to common ethical challenges you may encounter as a CHW.
  3. Identify ways to provide linguistically and culturally relevant services.
  4. Identify cultural mediation strategies.
  5. Describe elements of a community outreach plan.
  6. Create and deliver a health presentation.
  7. Describe strategies for community health assessments.
