The goal of this three-week course is to cover from start to finish what to expect in a quality improvement (QI) project. Learn how to scope and organize resources, LEAN problem solving, and how to verify impact and ensure sustainability. Plus, get tools, templates, and tips from people who have experience facilitating QI projects. This micro-course was developed in partnership with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Office of Partnership, Planning and Improvement and the Colorado Association for Local Public Health Officials (CALPHO) for public health agencies in Colorado. However, those working in other states and in other settings may find it useful as well.

Ideal for: Public Health Professionals Helping Facilitate QI Projects 

Cost

  • FREE to participants in Region VIII (CO, UT, WY, MT, ND, SD).
  • $75 for participants outside our region.

What to Expect

We use a flipped-classroom approach, so you’ll work through course content independently and then connect with a small cohort of peers weekly for live learning sessions that provide an opportunity to ask questions, share your knowledge, and learn from others.

This Course Will Take 3 Weeks to Complete

  • 2 weeks before the first live session, you will have access to the online materials.
  • Week 1: The Process: Overview, Scope & Organize Resources (1.5 hours)
  • Week 2: (LEAN) Problem Solving (1 hours)
  • Week 3: Verify Impact and Ensure Sustainment (1 hour)
Successful completion of this course requires your participation in these sessions by video using a webcam or built-in camera on your device.

Weekly Online Learning Activities

Each week, you must complete assigned online learning activities that include reading and watching videos. There will also be a short assignment to complete in preparation for each live learning session.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify: Find and recognize improvement opportunities.
  2. Problem-Solve: Utilize a set of quality improvement (QI) tools that include: defining problems and measuring processes; process mapping; finding root causes (using the five whys); prioritizing solutions; and creating an implementation plan and follow up.
  3. Evaluate: Identify and treat root causes of waste and variation.
  4. Manage Projects: Utilize a set of facilitation and project management skills.
  5. Activate Learning: Demonstrate how to incorporate change management practices into their work.
