Facilitation Community of Practice

In facilitation, the most powerful moments don’t come from what the facilitator says but from what participants say to each other. The facilitator’s role is to support the group in achieving its goals by creating the conditions for meaningful conversation and shared problem-solving.

And yet, when conversations are complex or challenging, the facilitator holds unique responsibilities, including:

  • Providing structure and creating a safe, intentional space that supports participant agency
  • Navigating boundaries and accountability with confidence and care

Many difficult facilitation moments trace back to one — or both — of these core responsibilities. When these responsibilities feel especially complex, facilitators benefit from continued practice, reflection, and support.

This Community of Practice (CoP) offers a supportive, peer-driven space to continue strengthening your confidence and facilitation practice after completing one of the following trainings:

  • Facilitation Foundations
  • Facilitation: From Brainstorming to Decision Making
  • Designing Effective Meetings

Because each biweekly session builds on the last and relies on shared relationships, we ask that you register only if you can commit to attending all six sessions. Space is limited.

Ideal for

Facilitators who have completed foundational training and are seeking an ongoing, supportive space to reflect, connect, and grow.

Cost

  • FREE to participants in Region VIII (CO, UT, WY, MT, ND, SD).
  • $160 for participants outside our region.

What to Expect

A space for peer learning, reflection, and connection. This Community of Practice (CoP) is intentionally designed to be a collaborative, conversation-driven space where facilitators can learn with and from one another. This isn’t another skills-based training or course — this is a shared learning environment built around real experiences, authentic reflection, and collective problem-solving.

In this community, your lived practice is the curriculum. Early sessions offer some structure to help build trust, establish shared norms, and create a strong foundation. As relationships deepen, the group naturally shifts toward a more participant‑driven experience — guided by your questions, challenges, and insights.

This CoP is ideal for facilitators seeking an ongoing, supportive space to reflect, connect, and grow. You’re encouraged to bring the real situations you’re navigating — tough moments, breakthrough successes, and everything in between. Together, we’ll explore strategies, share tools, and surface approaches that strengthen everyone’s practice. Over time, the community becomes a trusted circle where facilitators can learn, experiment, and build confidence — side by side.

Session themes build directly from the core facilitator responsibilities and reflect the real facilitation challenges participants bring to the group. The conversation will be shaped by participants’ experiences and practical strategies from experts in the field.

The session themes include:

  • Creating clarity and a supportive space
  • Facilitating meetings that get things done
  • Setting boundaries and following through
  • Redirecting dominant voices without damaging relationships or appearing disrespectful
  • Moving beyond high-level planning and transitioning into clearly defined action steps
  • Balancing different levels of content knowledge and expectations
