Empowering Cultural Humility and Belonging in Public Health Practice

In this 3-hour workshop, participants will delve deeper and discuss what it means to honor culture. The session will cover the concepts of cultural competency, sensitivity, humility, and safety, highlighting their importance in enhancing workplace and community belonging. Participants will engage in self-reflective practices and foster curiosity to build a more inclusive environment. They will also participate in small and large group discussion on key terms such as health equity, unconscious bias, and privilege, and compare Western and Indigenous models of values and teachings.

Participants will also examine strength-based and protective factors at individual, community, and workplace levels. Strategies for addressing conflict through restorative conversations will be introduced, including Indigenous approaches like circle talks. Finally, the training will encourage participants to honor their own balance by reflecting on the medicine wheel's quadrants—body, mind, spirit, and emotional well-being—and incorporating these insights into their daily lives.
