Ethics in Prevention Foundations: A Guide for Substance Abuse Prevention Practitioners

This moderated course is designed to span two weeks, and will take approximately six hours to complete, though timing will vary depending on participants’ familiarity with the content, learning style, and competing demands on their time. There are also five learning forum assignments designed to promote a deeper understanding of course content through personal reflection and group discussion. On passing the assessment at the end of this course, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion for six hours of participation.

Ideal for:

This course is appropriate for anyone working in the field of substance abuse prevention. It covers key terminology, the six principles in the Prevention Code of Ethics, and a decision-making process to use when faced with an ethical dilemma.

  • FREE to participants in Region VIII (CO, UT, WY, MT, ND, SD).

What to Expect

RMPHTC moderates this course, but the content is provided through HealtheKnowledge. After registering, you will be sent login information to the online learning platform the Friday before the course opens. Credit cannot be given for completing this course outside of this two week window.

2 Weeks of Working Through Moderated Online Content

Week 1 - Tasks to Complete

  • Monday: Module 1 - Getting Started, Introduction to Ethics, and Learning Forum 1
  • Wednesday: Module 2 - Non-discrimination, Competence, Integrity, and Learning Forum 2
  • Friday: Module 2 continued - Nature of Services, Confidentiality, Ethical Obligations for Community and Society, Learning Forum 3, and The Code

Week 2 - Tasks to Complete

  • Wednesday: Module 3 - Decision-Making Process, Case Study, and Learning Forum 4
  • Friday: Module 4 - Summary and Resources, Learning Forum 5, Additional Resources, Completing the Course, Certificate of Completion, References
Successful completion of this course requires that you review the course materials and respond to the questions posed in each the course’s five learning forums.
